Simple yet sturdy Fully empty His chair holds Memories His ceramic companion He'd pat and offer a cigarette to Then with a chuckle Pull it away, saying Nah, it's bad for you Early morning ritual Late evening stories He'd sit and reminisce Memories of his childhood Tales of his youth Love for his children What he got right And things that he missed
I think of you from time to time. Keeping you in my prayers for healing and health. I'm so grateful for your friendship and thoughtfulness throughout this journey.💖🙏🫂
Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Happy that the two of you made the most of your time together and that it left you with so many positive memories. He sounds like such a good man and I am sure he is missed by many. May your joyous memories continue to sustain your love for Billy.
This is beautiful. Your love for Billy shines through from his text messages, the silence from the humming of the machines to the way you keep the ashtray beside his chair is a poignant reminder of the way we try to deal with our feelings when someone we loved dies. My “empty” chair is a photo of my parents and aunt on my bookcase as we all loved reading.
Thank you, Vicky, for your thoughtful words and for sharing your “empty chair” of the bookcase and memories of how your parents and Aunt shared the joy of reading.
To know that in sharing my grief in a poem and story of Billy touched somebody's heart and helped in their own sorrow brings me comfort. 💞🫂✨

The image of his ashtray washed clean and back by his chair is so striking. Just beautiful.
