The Fortress
Safe is the space
concealed inside
Yearning to live
while praying to die
So, it begins
all within
Where walls are built
from layers of skin
Once tender in birth
are now calloused thick
Protecting
Deflecting
Borne to afflict
Redundant yet abundant
is love buried deep
Outwardly bleeding as it weeps
The Keeper's whisper
.... flood the gates
The enemy approaches
..... his weaponry hate
Confined
is the mind
Whose depth
inept
A fortress prison
Calcified
Encaged
Holy thy virtue
Sacred thy rage

Thank you for reading and commenting Jim.
I can understand why you may feel the poem was written about the vulnerability young women face, yet it was not intended that way.
The Fortress was meant metaphorically to represent how all of us withdraw within seeking protection from the outside world. Do we break free of walls built thick from those things we have suffered.
I am glad you have strong women in your life. It speaks of the safety they feel that many females have never been provided.
