The Child Within
The scene- older woman greying sits on the stool Infront of a full-length mirror The surroundings of her room dark- the spotlight soft in its glow focuses on her and the mirror. As the woman gazes into the mirror, a child appears (younger version of herself) sitting crossed legged staring back at her. Softly she calls- the conversation in a song like chant the back and forth between them takes the spectator within the womans subconscious. The tone- hauntingly beautiful as it reverberates and fills the auditorium Can you imagine yourself there? Does the image form within your mind? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Woman- Wait for me.... I know it`s hard to do Child- Break these chains.... That keep me from you Woman- Wait for me.... Child- Oh set me free Woman- Why must you stare Child- Do you hate me Woman- Wait for me, you mustn`t cry Child- I`m alone, locked here inside Woman- Dry your eyes Child- Oh, feel my pain Woman- Lift your head Child- There`s so much shame Woman- It`s ok, come take my hand (woman extends her hand toward child) Child- Don`t let go (child grasps the woman's hand) Woman- I understand (assures the child with a slow nod) Child- Wait for me Woman- It`s all I can do Child- Wait for me (child now steps through the mirror) Woman- To start loving you (woman and her younger self now embrace) (The room dims slowly to darkness) End of scene
My girls loved this song I wrote. They would act out the scene, their sweet voices softly chanting and expressing the emotion within the piece. Their voices so beautiful filled me with joy.
I miss those days, when they were young. I sang to them as babies and through their growing years.
This my song of healing, the beginning of a journey to loving oneself.
✨Be the Light✨

As the youngest of her girls, This was always one I loved but never really understood until becoming the mother struggling to heal the child within herself while trying to raise her son on her own. The strength my mother had at 21 with 2 girls, a job, and a man(my father) who was a good father but terrible husband is something to be damn proud of. I at 30 with one son and a struggling addiction and bar job life looked at and had to tell myself I could and need to be better, my mother never let us see struggle or worry about where home was. She kept us in a home that noone could take from us, with love and traditions of family and she sang to us every day. I never went to bed hungry or without being told I was loved, and for that I am the mother I am and my son hears me sing songs my momma sang to me and he's never without love! I hope to be half the mother this woman was, if I can do that I have no doubt my son will be a good man! Love you momma❤️ I'm so proud of you for finally sharing with the world what your words and music is worth and can be YOU, not the daughter, sister, wife, mom, grandma or friend.... Just YOU!
This is a deeply moving and evocative piece, Debbie. The imagery is so vivid, and the interplay between the woman and her younger self resonates profoundly with themes of healing, self-acceptance, and transformation. The song-like structure gives it a haunting, timeless quality, as though the dialogue is an echo from the soul.
The idea of the child stepping through the mirror to embrace the woman creates a powerful visual metaphor—bridging past and present, innocence and experience, pain and acceptance. It's a tender and cathartic moment, especially with the final line, “To start loving you,” which captures the essence of reconciliation with oneself.
Your daughters’ enactments must have been magical, their voices breathing life into this beautiful piece. It’s no wonder it brought you joy; the scene is not only art but a shared moment of love and creativity between mother and daughters. How lovely that you have this as part of your journey—a song of healing and light.
Thank you for sharing this treasure. It holds so much meaning, not just for you but for anyone seeking to mend their inner child and begin a path toward self-love. Truly, "Be the Light" radiates through this creation.
